ABOUT
I'm Dave Fern, long time proprietor of Chimney Solutions of Whitefish MT. Common questions asked of me:
1. How did you get into this?
I picked up a job in the mid eighties at a great little bike shop and stove dealer in Jackson, Wyoming. Selling bikes meant I had to sweep chimneys, install stoves, prefabricated chimneys and stainless steel liners. We moved to the Flathead and for a decade I was employed by Anderson Masonry Supply, doing sales and service around the wood stove world. I have been on my own for twenty years plus providing chimney and stove services.
2. Can you sweep a chimney from the inside?
Sometimes. I have a great German tool that does allow me to go through the stove if the design allows. This is NOT a roof free job! Often times, caps require separate cleaning or a masonry fireplace requires a downward brush because of the narrow damper and the surface of masonry liners.
3. How often should I clean my chimney?
I recommend I or a chimney professional inspect and or clean your chimney every 2-3 cords of wood. Needs vary on the type of stove (we are now in the newest 2020 emission standards for stoves and high efficient fireplaces), the type of wood and user.
